I am so pleased to bring you this wonderful find from a Paris antique market.
It is a long, 106" by 7.5" wide superb fabric panel. Although difficult to be precise with the age, I would asses it is a good 200+ years old. I suspect pre-French revolution because it has the crown motif.
The panel has a shimmering gold coloured base fabric with raised, skillfully executed embroidery of flowers, crowns and thistles as well as chain work embroidered adornements in gold thread.
There is stitching in crimson silk thread around the thistles, petals and has crimson velvet embroidered inside the crowns some of this has worn.
The designs face the central panel so each half of the pattern faces the centre.
It is backed on hessian, this may not be original, but not at all recent. You can see where the base fabric has been folded over, as it may have originally been and the panel is edged with an ornate trim which is of the same colour and age as the original panel.
The embroidery is in fabulous condition for ita age and still sparkles in the light. There are signs of its age and wear, particularly on the back where the silk has worn to splits and holes in places, this does not effect the integrity of the piece. There are some areas of wear at the edges and the centre where it has been folded. Additional photographs can be sent if required.
I have not cleaned it or altered it in any way, any work would need to be carried out under the supervision of a textile specialist.
