Versailles Palace is the most sumptuous French Royal Château just outside Paris, creation of Louis XIV, the Sun King. It is the image chosen for this antique compote, the centrepiece of the French Château ironstone diner service by C&M Paris (stamped on the base)
 
The compote has a transferware picture of Versailles on the bowl in French ink blue, along with its crest embelished with an ornate scroll and flower design.
 
The delightful compote stands 5" tall and the diameter of the top is just over 9". There is a chip on the underside of the foot and a small amount of patination on the plate.
